The Industrial Exhibition was the largest event held in Ireland and happened just two years after the 1851 International Industrial exhibition held in the Crystal Palace, Hyde Park London. The building later became part of the Royal University of Ireland and in 1908 was replaced by the National University of Ireland.

The historic treaty debates of Dail Eireann in December 1921 & January 1922 - attended by
Michael Collins, were held in the Earlsfort Terrace Building. During the 1970's, with the establishment of the new University Campus at Belfield, the building became available for use as the National Concert Hall.
