Gate Theatre & Rotunda Hospital building

Photo of Rotunda maternity hospital located on Parnell street, adjoining O'Connell street & Dublin city centre. Rotunda hospital was founded by Bartholomew Mosse (1712-1759) construction began in 1751 & completed in 1757 (ref: James Malton's Dublin). Richard Cassels the building's architect, also designed Leinster House. At that time the Rotunda was the largest lying-in hospital in the British Isles.

The Rotunda originally had several public areas for hosting social and fundraising events such as baloon-ascents, it was a charitable institution & dependent on public donations. The publicity poster above advertises one such event on Easter Monday 24th April 1848, with an ascent & parachute jump from the Irish National Baloon "Erin go Brath".

The Gate Theatre, where the Rotunda supper rooms were located. The theatre was founded in 1928 by Micheál MacLiammóir & Hilton Edwards.
