|The Wellington monument is located just 2km from Dublin's city center in the Phoenix Park. Covering an area of 1750 acres it is the largest enclosed park in Europe. The Dublin Zoo, U.S. Ambassadors residence, Papal Cross & Aras an Uachtarain - official home of the The Irish President, are also located within the park grounds.
The Wellington monument is 63m (205ft) high. It was built to commemorate the Irish born Duke of Wellington's military campaigns including Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo in 1815. Originally planned for Merrion Square near Wellesley's birthplace in the city but relocated to Phoenix park following objections from residents. The monument foundation stone was laid in 1817, though a lack of funding delayed its completion until 1861. Born Arthur Wellesley in 1769 at Mornington House, 24 Upper Merrion Street, Wellington was also inventor of the famous water-resistant boot named after him.
